Beard Oil Guide: What It Does and How to Use It Properly

Beard oil conditions the hair and the skin underneath. It is not a growth product, and most people use far too much.

What it actually does

Beard oil replaces the moisture that facial hair pulls away from the skin. It softens coarse hair, reduces the itch of early growth, and stops flaking underneath a fuller beard. It does not create new follicles or make a patchy beard fill in.

How much to use

Start low. Excess oil is the reason beards look greasy rather than conditioned.

  • Stubble — 2 to 3 drops
  • Short beard — 3 to 5 drops
  • Medium beard — 5 to 7 drops
  • Long beard — 8 to 10 drops

How to apply it

Apply to a clean, towel-dried beard while the skin is still slightly damp. Warm the oil between your palms, work it into the skin under the beard first, then draw it out through the hair and comb through to distribute evenly.

Oil, balm or both

Oil conditions; balm adds light hold and shape. Short beards usually need only oil. If your beard grows outward or has flyaways, use oil first and finish with a small amount of balm.

FAQs

Does beard oil grow a beard?

No. It conditions hair and the skin beneath it, which makes existing growth look and feel better, but it does not create new growth.

When is the best time to apply beard oil?

Right after washing, on a towel-dried beard, so the oil goes onto skin that is still slightly damp.
